This house, located at 245 Pennsylvania Street in Carlisle between 3rd and 4th, was built by Eugene F. Keeney for John H. and Sarah E. Randleman in 1907.

Local tradition holds that the house, surrounded by 29 acres of land at the time of construction, was the first private residence in Carlisle heated by a furnace and lit by acetylene gas. In addition it was furnished with a bath, indoor toilet and other modern conveniences of the day.

Although John and Sarah had nine children by 1907, only four of them would live in this house. John and Sarah themselves resided in the house until their deaths: John in 1922 and Sarah in 1939. Fred Randleman purchased the house after Sarah’s death, and in the 1940s Arden W. and Lulu Belle Keeney (one of John and Sarah’s daughters) became its owners. In the 1960s the property came into the Peterson family when it was purchased by Charles and Eva Peterson.

Late in the summer of 2007, one hundred years after the building of the house, the newly formed Carlisle Area Historical Society began to consider the property for use as a local history facility and museum. Thanks to generous bequeathments from the estates of Mary Adams and Ewing Lanning, the Society was able to purchase the house from the Peterson family and took possession on October 1, 2007.
