The John H. and Sarah E. (Stumbo) Randleman House

Randleman HouseThis house, located at 245 Pennsylvania Street in Carlisle between 3rd and 4th, was built by Eugene F. Keeney for John H. and Sarah E. Randleman in 1907.Local tradition holds that the house, surrounded by 29 acres of land at the time of construction, was the first private residence in Carlisle heated by a furnace and lit by acetylene gas. In addition it was furnished with a bath, indoor toilet and other modern conveniences of the day. Although John and Sarah had nine children by 1907, only four of them would live in this house. John and Sarah themselves resided in the house until their deaths: John in 1922 and Sarah in 1939. Fred Randleman purchased the house after Sarah’s death, and in the 1940s Arden W. and Lulu Belle Keeney (one of John and Sarah’s daughters) became its owners. In the 1960s the property came into the Peterson family when it was purchased by Charles and Eva Peterson. Late in the summer of 2007, one hundred years after the building of the house, the newly formed Carlisle Area Historical Society began to consider the property for use as a local history facility and museum. Thanks to generous bequeathments from the estates of Mary Adams and Ewing Lanning, the Society was able to purchase the house from the Peterson family and took possession on October 1, 2007

Update
Glascock Flooring of Indianola spent two long weeks sanding, staining and re-finishing the floors at the Randleman House.  We chose a dark stain to match the existing wood and a high gloss finish. They are breathtaking. Because of our non-profit status Glascock gave us a significant discount. A Warren County Philanthropic Partnership Grant, funds donated from Questers and matching funds from our efforts paid for the work. Without continued grants and donations our restoration cannot continue. Please consider helping today.

Murder Mystery Dinner
The first Murder Mystery Dinner was held at the Randleman House on August 1st. This was a small play designed for 6-8 people and was a huge success. We had a great meal and tons of laughs. Now that the first floor renovations are substantially complete there will be something going on every month. Watch your inbox for notices about upcoming events. These events are designed as fund-raisers so our work on the house can continue.
